For the Parents…

Thank you for your interest in our Books with Boone program at the Maple Lake Library.  We’ve designed it to keep students engaged with books through the summer – to help make reading fun! While the activities are targeted for children who have completed First, Second and Third grades, we welcome all interested children and try to adjust to their interest levels.

This blog will be updated weekly, with information about the activities of the day, so please check back regularly.

In an effort to introduce some awareness of our community, the program will spotlight a local business each week. As part of this initiative, we’ll tour a few of these businesses near the end of the 10 week program, to meet the staff and learn a bit about their work. As we get closer to this date, information will be updated on the blog, in the Messenger, and at the library.

Weekly activities will include an opportunity to read to Boone the greyhound, to complete a couple of hands-on creative, reading and/or writing projects, and to engage in fun social interactions with other participants.  Cooperation is encouraged and older children are generally very willing to help the younger readers.

New this year is a “Reader Recommendation” component, in which readers complete a simple form with information about books they enjoy, with the goal to compile a notebook (stored in the Children’s Section of the library) with suggestions that may be helpful for other young readers.  The recommendations may also be found on the Pawsitive Steps website under the tab “Books Suggested by Boone’s Buddies”.

We will have the Books with Boone library blog available on the computers at the library during our program so participants can explore the blog, and access a weekly word puzzle.

The popular Paw Points program returns this year, with points earned for reading to Boone, completing the activities of the day, submitting a “Reader Recommendation,” and for being a Book Buddy by helping another participant with any of the day’s projects. Points are recorded with paw print stickers on the “Read to Succeed” track posters displayed at the library and will be rewarded with a fabulous Surprise Prize on the last day of our summer program – August 16.
